How Chiropractic Works

Chiropractic is the world's largest natural system of health care that respects our innate (inborn) potential to be well. Using neither drugs nor surgery, we work with you to achieve your health goals by removing interference in your spine and nervous system.

Chiropractic care is over 100 years old and works on four basic premises:

  1. Our bodies are self-healing and self-regulating. When you woke up this morning, did you have to think about how much blood your heart would pump today? No. Did you consider how your liver would metabolize your breakfast? No. Innately, your health is controlled from within, without you stopping to think about it.
  2. The master controller of our innate intelligence within is our nervous system. Our brain is in communication with every cell within us, directing cellular function.
  3. If there is any interference in your nervous system, it will lead not only to physical complaints, but psycho-emotional problems and a loss of human potential. The most common interference to the nervous system is called a subluxation, caused by misaligned spinal vertebrae.
  4. The role of the Chiropractor is to locate interference in the nervous system and remove it, relieving pressure on the nerves so optimum potential can be realized and health regained. This is called a Chiropractic adjustment.

When interference is removed, miracles can happen. At East St. Paul Family Chiropractic we have helped many people regain their health and increase their quality of life, naturally.

History of Chiropractic

Modern Chiropractic was discovered in 1895 when Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first modern Chiropractic adjustment on his hearing impaired janitor, Harvey Lilliard. Lilliard's hearing returned, and Dr. Palmer believed he had found a cure for deafness. But as patients with digestive troubles, sciatica, menstrual problems, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, and many other conditions responded to spinal care, Dr. Palmer realized that he had discovered something more far-reaching indeed.

Since 1895, Chiropractic has grown world-wide. In Canada, over four-and-a-half million Canadians receive chiropractic care each year, while in the U.S., over 100 million adjustments are given every year to enhance health and well-being. Chiropractors are trained to help you achieve wellness through a common sense approach to living. There are currently more than 6,000 chiropractors practicing across the country.

Chiropractic for a Long, Healthy Life

Will you live to be 100? The odds are in your favour!

According to the US Census Bureau, your odds of living to 100 years old are growing every year. The following statistics will amaze you:

In 1980, it was estimated that there were approximately 15,000 people over the age of a hundred. Today they estimate that there are approximately 37,000 people over the age of a hundred. By the middle of the next century, the year 2050, they estimate there will be over 800,000 people over the age of a hundred.

What will life be like for you if you get there? Will you be able to enjoy your life like some centenarians who are learning how to use a computer and writing books, or will you be like George Burns who said, "if I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself."

Many of the people who are over the age of 100 years old today suffer poor quality of life. They live with severe arthritis, pain, and disease. Is this the way it's supposed to be? I doubt it!

Consider these facts about the nursing home generation. Most of the seniors had no idea they were going to live as long as they have. Their healthcare philosophy was "if it ain't broke don't fix it." They had minimal education on wellness, and were, in general, not proactive about their health.

Rather than wait until we have diseases and degeneration throughout our bodies, doesn't it make sense to begin taking care of ourselves now?

What can we do differently today, to enjoy our lives more fully and prepare for a high quality of life down the road? We all know the answers; it's just a matter of making the answers a part of our lifestyle.

Good health has nothing to do with age.

We all know 30-year-old people who feel and act like they are 60, and we all know 60 year olds who feel and act 30.

You deserve to live a long, healthy, quality life. One of the first things that people say when they begin receiving Chiropractic care is that they feel younger, healthier, and more active. This is because they are experiencing their true health potential once again.

Good health choices now will help you and your family age gracefully down the road. Don't wait until your health choices become a life or death, or quality of life issue for you. Make good health choices today and make Chiropractic a part of your life.

Two Types of Chiropractors

Although all chiropractors may practice a little differently, there are two basic objectives among them.

  1. The first type is a Limited Scope or Therapeutic Chiropractor. The therapeutic chiropractor is concerned with pain and symptoms, arriving at a diagnosis, and treating the condition (back pain, headache, sciatica, etc.). The objective of this chiropractor is to help remove the pain or symptoms so the person is more comfortable or feels better.
  2. The second type of is a Wellness Chiropractor. This type of chiropractor focuses on the correction of the underlying cause of the problem and the overall health and well-being of the patient and their family. The non-diagnostic, non-therapeutic chiropractor is concerned with the location and correction of vertebral subluxation. It does not matter if the person has back pain, sciatica, cancer, diabetes, or no pain or symptoms at all. If there is a subluxation present, the body and mind cannot work properly.

Dr. Michael Engel is a Wellness Chiropractor. He focuses on locating and removing vertebral subluxations that interfere with the proper functioning of the nervous system. By correcting the subluxation, he allows the innate intelligence of the body to be better expressed which improves every aspect of life. We will do our very best to improve the integrity of your nervous system by the correction of your subluxations. As your nervous system improves, your life improves.
